Greetings, City Church Family
The City Church Board of Elders approaches all decisions that impact the lives of our church family prayerfully, cautiously, and by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
With this in mind, we have chosen to join other faith leaders and congregations in honoring Mandate 15 of the Municipality of Anchorage.
First and foremost, we honor the greater mandate of James 1:19 that says:
“…let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger…”
In this time, we are striving not to react to what is perceived as urgent (in the thinking of some); choosing, rather, to wait for the prompting of the Holy Spirit in how we should respond.
- Just as King David waited when he inquired of the Lord before going into battle, even though the seemingly obvious choice was to go immediately (1 Samuel 30:8);
- Just as Jesus waited when He opted not to follow the advice of his brother to rush to be seen by the crowd of people at the Feast of Booths (John 7:1-6). Rather, He waited for the right time to go into Jerusalem and to speak.
The combative tone of some U.S. faith leaders and congregations, against the Covid mandates, is one our Board of Elders deems hurried and unwarranted given that Christian leaders and congregations are not being told to reject Christ or to not assemble in the Name of the Lord. We would never comply with such a directive!
Rather, here in Alaska, faith leaders and churches are merely being asked to aid in slowing and stopping the spread of a virus that has proven to maim and to kill.
Please know that the Elders of City Church, are not promoting fear or weakness by our patient posture; rather, to the contrary, we demonstrate our strength to discern that this is not the time to draw our swords in defiance when a soft answer is enough to accomplish the will of the Lord (Proverbs 15:1).
The time may come when a soft answer will not suffice. At that time, we will boldly make our voices heard.
In the meantime, we must continue to be the Church and to engage in equipping families for ministry and to engage in fellowship.
In September we will safely resume Kingdom Life Groups that will allow for multiple life groups to meet and to enjoy relationship, while being equipped for ministry.
Thank you for being people of honor and understanding.
You are loved!
On behalf of the City Church Board of Elders,
Pastor Kim Patterson
